Personality Compatibility for INFJ in Dating and Matchmaking

The INFJ personality type is rare, present in just 1.5% of the population. INFJs are quietly determined individualists who have their own ways of looking at things. While there are 16 MBTI/Jung personality types, not all are compatible for dating and matchmaking with the INFJ. Here are five compatible personality types and two they'll find challenging.

Understand the INFJ personality type

INFJ stands for Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, Judgement.

I — Introversion (rather than Extraversion)

INFJs tend to be quiet and reserved. They generally prefer interacting with a few close friends rather than a wide circle of acquaintances.

N — Intuition (rather than Sensing)

INFJs tend to be more abstract than focused on practical details. Their attention is drawn to the big picture and on future possibilities rather than immediate realities.

F — Feeling (rather than Thinking)

INFJs tend to value personal preference or their emotional reading of the room above objective criteria. When making decisions, they generally give more weight to social considerations than logic.

J — Judgement (rather than Perception)

INFJs approach life in a structured way, but their inner world is highly intuitive — combining structured outer life with deeply reflective inner processing.

Relationship compatibility

INFJs enjoy coming to new understandings, and their brains "light up" thinking about all possibilities. Sometimes they get stuck analysing and re-analysing, fearing they have missed something critical. They tend to be perceptive, spontaneous, creative, and sensitive. INFJs have a talent for seeing how liabilities can be turned into assets. Because they prefer harmonious surroundings, they can overextend themselves attending to the problems of others. INFJs are in their element quietly developing their ideas, theories, and principles.

Five great matches for the INFJ personality type

The INFJ and INFP couple

These types generally work well together. The INFP starts projects with great enthusiasm but doesn't finish them — annoying to the INFJ, but they generally speak the same language.

The INFJ and ENFJ couple

These two understand and appreciate each other, although the ENFJ will find the INFJ's need for quiet time puzzling, and the INFJ will see the ENFJ's need to frequently socialise somewhat taxing.

The INFJ and ENFP couple

The gregarious ENFP's frequently expressed enthusiasm for new projects (which are quickly discarded) will leave the INFJ bemused and sometimes very annoyed. However, they share values and have much in common.

The INFJ and INTJ couple

The INFJ is deeply reflective, creative, and quietly caring. The INTJ is sceptical, independent, with a high need for competency. Each will appreciate what the other contributes.

The INFJ and INFJ couple

These people will have a great deal in common. They share a common disregard for details, which could affect their day-to-day life together — but on the whole, a perfect match.

Two challenging matches

The INFJ and ESTJ relationship

The ESTJ is strongly opinionated — something the INFJ will resist mostly privately, but when the opinion violates an important principle, the resistance will be very strong.

The INFJ and ESTP relationship

The ESTP is very spontaneous, gregarious, and responds to the here and now. The INFJ — quiet and contemplative — will not find this relationship comfortable.

What does it mean for the INFJ type?

Out of the sixteen personalities, the INFJ is most compatible with INFPs, ENFJs, ENFPs, INTJs, and INFJs. In romantic relationships, these personality types become natural companions to the INFJ.
